There are several vital skills everyone needs to know in relation to water safety, whether at sea or on inland waters:
- Awareness of safety in and around the water, with reference to tides, currents, winds and local conditions.
- What to do in an emergency: who to contact, action steps while waiting for assistance.
- Practical CPR training; each child is given a mouthpiece, and encouraged to practice on a CPR doll.
Water safety workshops consist of an educator teaching a class about rules for safe water play. Children are taught about possible dangers around water, and how to avoid them. These are classroom lessons. In the interests of peer rescue, children are taught bystander CPR. This empowers them to assist in the event of an emergency, and increases their knowledge and life skills base.
In a water related emergency, every second counts, and WaterWise wants children and their teachers to know exactly what to do to help save lives. The WaterWise motto is: Be a Hero – Learn CPR
