WaterWise participated in The Canal Safety Project in Kirkwood during September 2007. This is a joint partnership between: Department Water Affairs & Forestry, Sundays River Valley Municipality, Lower Sundays River Water User Association, WaterWise Warriors and Swimming South Africa.
Canals in the Sundays River Valley have been in existence for over 100 years and are there for the distribution of water over an area nearly 70 kilometers in length. They are used mainly for agricultural purposes, but can also be used for household purposes through the local municipality.
Communities were created or established near these canals as boundaries for development. This in turn created easy access to canals by the communities for recreational purposes. This is not permitted due to the various dangers of the canals. Incidents of drowning occur yearly in the areas where canals are running through the local communities of the Sundays River Valley Municipal area. (53 drownings since 2005).
WaterWise was invited to present a water safety programme, specifically for schools in the Sundays River Valley in Kirkwood, Easter Cape Region during the launch of the Canal Safety Project.
Ten schools (approximately 5000 children) were visited during the pilot week, 3 to 10 October 2007, with community representatives. The WaterWise workshops were offered to all learners and mouth-pieces given. The presentations were very well received by the learners. Participation from the learners was excellent; they were really eager to join in and learn how to do basic CPR. The WaterWise Warriors’ DVD was presented to each of the schools.
