Safe sport in Khayelitsha

WaterWise, the education initiative of Sea Rescue, teamed up with Life Cycling Academy to offer a week of safe sport at the Khayelitsha swimming pool during the Easter holidays.
Funded by Engen, this event culminated in a mini-triathlon event for 180 youngsters in Khayelitsha on Friday, 28 March.
Water and road safety tips were taught to groups of youngsters during the week as they practised their swimming and biking skills. Coordinator for the WaterWise initiative, Linda Els, is excited about the opportunity to highlight safety in sport.
“Nowadays children are often exposed to new and exciting sports, but seldom taught safety and self-rescue rules. We aim to show them basic water safety skills, and how to cycle safely on the road, then allow them to compete for a certificate of competence in these areas.”
Netcare911 paramedics were on standby for the event, after having spent the week showing the children how to perform bystander CPR in the event of an emergency.
CEO of Life Cycling Academy, Glyn Broomberg, is enthusiastic about the partnership. “We already have safe cycling programmes running in Khayelitsha schools; this holiday initiative gives kids the chance to see a multisport event in action. It shows them how sport can be relevant in their lives. Working with WaterWise and their water safety and rescue programme is a great opportunity for the kids to learn about water as well as road safety.”
